Some that idolizes the notion of playing major league baseball can lose himself in a baseball videogame. No, this does not mean the person lives a Walter Mitty fantasy existence. Rather, the individual's suspension of disbelief leads to the player falling into the game and assuming he is the videogame character on the subconscious level.
Upon reading such a description, some may wonder if there is anything inherently wrong with falling so deeply into a realm of suspension of disbelief. The answer to this is no because most people are completely unaware of the process. It is witnessed and forgotten on the subconscious level. It is also the subconscious level that attracts someone to purchase the game in the first place.
What is the manner in which this process occurs? It can often happen without the gamer even being consciously aware of it. Let's return to the aforementioned baseball scenario as an example: a gamer may have a deep and sincere affection for the game. This is what attracts the person to the games and also greatly contributes to the decision to make an actual purchase.
Is there anything unhealthy with engaging in such a process? The answer to this query is most definitely a resounding no. Stepping into the shoes of a sports idol or fantasy character thanks to a videogame system has many positives for those in need of a little levity. Gamers are not looking for an escape as much as they are wish for a pleasing diversion.
To a great extent, the vast majority of positive traits can be found on the subconscious level. Someone that finds the traits of heroes to be worth duplicating will note that a videogame allows one to step into a hero's shoes and also embody these same traits. Such mythical role models can have a greater impact on people's subconscious than most imagine.
There has been a great variety of psychology books written on the subject of videogames and one of the most compelling aspects of these books is the fact that much of what has been written is positive. Why? It is because many people involved with honest psychological studies of videogames discover the helpful and neo-therapeutic benefits of gaming.
Videogames are not the mere leisure time pursuit some assess them as. They have the potential to be a window into motivations and inner traits of the gamer. This fact does not change just because the gamer is not aware of it.
