Caring for your Rare Vinyl Records Collection

By Jon Moreno

Despite the increasing popularity of CDs and MP3 players, a lot of people still find collecting rare vinyl records a worthwhile activity. Why? Because these records have cool vintage value. Now, if you happen to be one of those collectors, then you must do the necessary steps to preserve the value of your collection. Here are some ways to care for your rare vinyl records.

One, you should always keep your records dust-free and scratch-free. How to do this? Well, you can make use of clean cloth and cleaning solution. Just a piece of reminder: when cleaning your records, make sure you follow the path of the grooves. That way, you won't cause any more scratches. Also, avoid cleaning them outside your home and putting them back to their sleeves when they are not yet fully dried.

Second, store your vinyl records in a dust-free and a cool dry area of your home. Dust can diminish your records' sound quality and cause them to get damaged over time. That's also true if you expose them to excessive heat. So if you really want to preserve these items, make sure to keep them in a safe place. Also, remember to store them in a vertical position. It is not a good idea to stack them atop one another because this can cause them to warp.

And three, secure your vinyl records by getting them paper sleeves or clear plastic sleeves. Some people are too careless and take these accessories for granted. They don't know that without these, their records will be more prone to damage. Don't be one of them. Protect your records by getting them only the best sleeves.

Preserving your rare vinyl records collection is quite a simple thing to do. That is, if you bear these 3 effective ways in mind - keeping them clean, storing them properly, and getting them the best sleeves. Once you do all these, you're assured that your records will stay in good condition for long.

Movies And MP3

Movies and MP3 files are already compressed with near maximum capacity. Repacking them would just create larger files and increase decompression time. Ripped movies are still packaged due to the large file size, but compression is disallowed and the RAR format is used only as a container. Because of this, modern playback software can easily play a release directly from the packaged files, and even stream it as the release is downloaded (if the network is fast enough).

MP3 and music video releases are an exception in that they are not packaged into a single archive like almost all other sections. These releases have content that is not further compressible without loss of quality, but also have small enough files that they can be transferred reliably without breaking them up. Since these releases rarely have large numbers of files, leaving them unpackaged is more convenient and allows for easier scripting. For example, scripts can read ID3 information from MP3s and sort releases based on those contents.
