Paul Edgecomb plays a prison officer of Death row inmates at the Louisiana Corrections Facility during the great depression. Paul and his co-workers must ensure that they fulfill their duties with respect when carrying out executions but they face difficulties from a new prisoner named wild Bill and from a fellow prison officer named Percy. Paul Edgecomb and his colleagues are also expecting a new prisoner, a gentle giant of a man named John Coffe who has a God given gift of healing the sick. ...
