Illegal Movie Downloads Are A No No

By Benjamin Clay

It doesn't take too long to find a place offering movie downloads these days; a few clicks of the mouse is all it really takes. However, many of these sites are illegal and, though many think this fine, it is far from being so. Indeed, there are a good many reasons why it is so damaging.

Many people have real issues with the cost of going to see a movie these days and, whilst that is perfectly understandable, that is no reason to steal. And that is what illegally downloading is. People that make movies; directors, actors, crew and make-up guys are just making a living like everyone else. And these are the direct victims.

Additionally, the people responsible for setting up these sites are very often involved in a lot of other crimes. That may not seem too bad perhaps, though when you understand that these crimes include people trafficking, drug running and international terrorism; it offers food for thought.

However, things are complicated; particularly with the fact that a number of movies can be downloaded for free perfectly legitimately. However, if you are unsure, you can always check with the movies distributor. And of course, if it is a recent movie, the answer is already there.

Other than the crime, it is also highly unusual to get a perfect copy from illegal sites. Though some are watchable, the quality just isn't there be it a distortion in the sound and dialogue, a jumpy screen, flickering colors or the favorite; people moving in front of the screen. These all happen, consistently and will continue to be the case.

Technology has come on amazingly over recent years, and this is certainly the case where movies are concerned. Surround sound, high definition, three dimensional, Blu Ray, are all meant to add to viewing pleasure. You just do not get this added quality with pirated movies; let alone the extra features.

When using an illegal site too, you don't really have any guarantees as to what you are downloading. You could well be introducing a new virus to your computer at the same time. Even on sites up and running for years this happens.

Increasingly, the industry and the authorities are coming together to fight these crimes, and they are monitoring what is going on. If you have downloaded a movie in the last year, it is likely someone has traced you. They will not prosecute all, at the moment, but it will happen, and the penalties will be severe.

However, the industry also recognizes that fact that downloading movies is convenience in today's modern age, and they are supplying access to this for themselves. But there has to be charge, of course, and people need to understand that. It is getting cheaper and the benefits to watching a move as it was meant to be enjoyed cannot be understated.

Movie downloads are the future for rental and purchase of course, that much is clear, and steps are being taken to cater for this. However, illegally accessing something is a crime, and not really beneficial to anyone, except those that profit from it.

Movies And MP3

Movies and MP3 files are already compressed with near maximum capacity. Repacking them would just create larger files and increase decompression time. Ripped movies are still packaged due to the large file size, but compression is disallowed and the RAR format is used only as a container. Because of this, modern playback software can easily play a release directly from the packaged files, and even stream it as the release is downloaded (if the network is fast enough).

MP3 and music video releases are an exception in that they are not packaged into a single archive like almost all other sections. These releases have content that is not further compressible without loss of quality, but also have small enough files that they can be transferred reliably without breaking them up. Since these releases rarely have large numbers of files, leaving them unpackaged is more convenient and allows for easier scripting. For example, scripts can read ID3 information from MP3s and sort releases based on those contents.
