Learn About Watching Movies Online

By Cody Bray

Long gone are the days when you had to leave your house to watch the newest and latest movies. With ever increasing advances in digital technology, it is now possible to stream movies directly from the internet, making it possibly to see the latest films without going to the cineplex or driving out to the local video store. This piece will talk about the tools you need to watch movies online, tell you where to find streaming video, and tell you which websites to stay away from.

There are some basic things that you need to see movies on the internet. First, you need a high speed internet connection with plenty of available bandwidth. This is because movie files are very data intensive and you need to have a very fast connection in order to watch movies clearly.

You will also need a computer with a processor that is fast enough to handle digital data streams as well as a decent video card. Most new laptops and computers come optimized for digital home entertainment, so if you have upgraded your system recently, you shouldn't have any trouble.

Hundreds of sites exist which feature streaming movie content. One of the biggest players on the streaming video market is Hulu, which offers free streaming movies. Though Hulu has some downsides such as small selection and advertisement placement within the videos, the quality of the video on Hulu is extremely high.

If you want newer movies, many websites allow you to watch movies online for a small rental fee. Two such sites are Netflix and Blockbuster. Both sites allow you to rent movies for very affordable prices and have fairly large selections. Unlike Hulu, both Netflix and Blockbuster allow you to temporarily store the movie you want to watch on your hard drive for periods of 24 to 48 hours. One word of warning, the files that you download are protected and cannot be copied to portable media devices or DVDs, so don't try!

For those of you who are intrigued by the idea of watching streaming movies, but who don't want to be stuck staring at a computer monitor, there are several technologies available that allow you to watch the films you select on your television set. If you have an older laptop or desktop, you can generally connect them to your television set using a serial monitor cable. This allows you to use your TV like an external monitor and lets you see everything that is going on your desktop.

For those of you with high definition televisions and newer computer systems, you can hook your laptop or desktop up to your TV set using an HDMI cable. This works basically the same way as the serial monitor cable, but lets you watch movies in high definition. Computers are also in development which can send video to your television wirelessly.

When looking for sources of online video, be careful to steer clear of websites offering pirated video content. Most of these sites features movies that are still in the theatres. Of course, since these sites do not have the licenses to display this video, the content is illegal. Furthermore, these websites are generally lousy with malicious software that will damage your computer if you try to watch the online movies.

Movies And MP3

Movies and MP3 files are already compressed with near maximum capacity. Repacking them would just create larger files and increase decompression time. Ripped movies are still packaged due to the large file size, but compression is disallowed and the RAR format is used only as a container. Because of this, modern playback software can easily play a release directly from the packaged files, and even stream it as the release is downloaded (if the network is fast enough).

MP3 and music video releases are an exception in that they are not packaged into a single archive like almost all other sections. These releases have content that is not further compressible without loss of quality, but also have small enough files that they can be transferred reliably without breaking them up. Since these releases rarely have large numbers of files, leaving them unpackaged is more convenient and allows for easier scripting. For example, scripts can read ID3 information from MP3s and sort releases based on those contents.
